Kuala Lumpur, 30 October – 40 students of St. John’s International School KL got to learn all about environmental issues, climate change and the forest in the Forest Conservation Workshop organized by Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre (TRCRC) in collaboration with Vanke Malaysia.
To incorporate fun and humour into the learning environment, TRCRC devised an entertaining programme for the students which comprised thought-provoking questions, competitive quizzes and interactive games. Prizes and warm applause were given to students who gave good answers or opinions, creating an overall rewarding experience while learning about environmental awareness and protection.
Some of the other important takeaways from the Forest Conservation Workshop include the increasing number of reports and studies on climate change, and how we as humans can take necessary steps to reduce our carbon footprint. St. John’s International School KL students were encouraged to discuss this topic in groups, and they managed to form their own opinions in doing their part for the environment in their own creative ways.
To recap, Vanke Malaysia had previously partnered with TRCRC to support forest restoration initiatives as well as plant over 200 trees in Lahad Datu, Merisuli. The Forest Conservation Workshop held on 30th October 2019 was another collaboration by the two parties, organized with the aim to teach students about the environment, the forests, and how they can play a role in protecting our natural resources.
Kuala Lumpur, 6 September 2019 – In pursuit of preserving Mother Nature, Vanke Malaysia has once again expanded its environmental footprint today with its successful tree planting program at Taman Eko Rimba Bukit Nanas.
This marks the second time Vanke has collaborated with EcoKnights, the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia and Taman Eko Rimba Kuala Lumpur to jointly organise a tree-planting initiative at Taman Eko Rimba.
A total of 20 trees from four different species, namely Kasai (Pometia Pinnata), Mangga Madu (Mangifera indica), Longan Ping Pong (Dimocarpus Longan) and Jambu Bol (Syngium Malaccense) were planted today by students from St.John’s International School (SJIS), Vanke Malaysia’s employees and Eco Knights volunteers.
This event provided an enriching green experience to all the 38 students and volunteers, who have participated in the tree-planting initiative. The campaign was also a timely reminder about the importance of preserving Mother Nature amid human civilisation’s rapid development.
All the trees were planted together with fertilizer and coconut husk to provide a moist and nutritious environment for the trees to grow. Moving forward, in order to ensure the trees’ continued and healthy growth, staff from the Taman Eko Rimba will assist in providing regular inspection and care of the planted trees.
Following the tree-planting session today, all participants took part in a group photo session.
Vanke's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development is in line with one of its key corporate social responsibility (CSR) pillars. Vanke continues to focus on the “green agenda” environmental protection as a key working direction. Through pro-environment measures, including forest restoration projects in degraded forests, canopy restoration as well as improving watersheds and chain areas by planting different tree species, Vanke Malaysia seeks to contribute to the society in the greenest way possible.
On a bright and shiny Saturday morning in May, Vanke Malaysia hosted an adventurous nature outing together with Project Heart at Tadom Hill with 21 children from Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home (PECH) and Ephratha Home. Located 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, the outing was an opportunity for the children to experience getting back to nature and having fun outdoors.
There was never a dull moment with the children from the moment they arrived at Tadom Hill. Fun team building activities were planned out to encourage the children and Vanke employees to play and work together. Some of the games played include the Human Knot, where teams had to work together to untangle themselves without breaking the chain as well as the Minefield Challenge, where in teams they had to strategise using communication and trust skills.
Everyone had a wonderful time at the waterfront facilities of Tadom Hill including racing on bamboo rafts, leaping from a five-metre-high platform into the cool waters at the lake. It was an unforgettable experience for both the children and Vanke employees.
Kuala Lumpur, 12 April 2019 – Vanke Malaysia expanded its environmental footprint this morning with the launch of their Hutan Simpan Bukit Nanas Conservation Project. In collaboration with EcoKnights, the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia and Taman Eko Rimba Kuala Lumpur, Vanke Malaysia organized a tree-planting initiative at Taman Eko Rimba.

A total of 30 fruit trees were planted by 28 student volunteers from Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah (SMSAS), Vanke Malaysia’s employees and EcoKnights volunteers. The Taman Eko Rimba staff will assist in regular inspection and caring of the planted trees to ensure their steady growth.
After the tree-planting session, the students took part in an Eco-Enzyme workshop where they learnt to reuse plant-based kitchen waste such as fruit skins and leafy vegetables to create a cleaning agent through a fermentation process using brown sugar and water. This initiative inspired students to support the cause of sustainable living and to work towards learning to create a chemical-free household.
Vanke’s commitment to environment conservation and sustainability is in line with one of its key corporate social responsibility (CSR) pillars. Through environmental protection initiatives which include forest restoration projects in degraded forests, focusing on canopy restoration, improving water catchment and linkage areas by planting varying forest tree species, Vanke Malaysia seeks to give back in a way that is as green as possible.
Giving our time to those in need is our way of giving back. Spending a day at Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home has given us a place to leave a lasting and positive impact in the children’s lives.
Education and growth of adolescents have always been Vanke’s top priority, especially in poverty-stricken areas. Donating to building schools, promoting fruits of education reforms and awarding excellent talents have spread knowledge to more children.

China, 2 April, 2020, Vanke founding shareholders’ equity management center (hereinafter referred to as the Center) and Tsinghua University Education Foundation signed a donation agreement. According to the agreement, the Center, on behalf of all Vanke employees, donated the entirety of its asset - 200 million Vanke shares - to Tsinghua University Education Foundation.
It will be used to set up the Tsinghua University Vanke Public Health Discipline Development Special Fund. Vanke and Tsinghua University will work together to build the Vanke School of Public Health, Tsinghua University. Margaret Chan, former Director-General of WHO will be the first Dean of the school and Mr. Wang Shi, founder and Honorary Chairman of Vanke will be the school’s Honorary Director.
The special fund will be used to continuously buttress future development of the school by supporting research and innovation, rewarding scientific findings and bringing in needed talents. Vanke and Tsinghua will fully utilize their respective advantages, to effectively facilitate training of professionals, scientific research and policy making in the public health area, with the aim of significantly improving China’s ability to handle major public health emergencies, and contributing to the well-being of mankind.
The school will take a comprehensive, international and high standard approach, give full play to disciplinary strengths of Tsinghua University, and create a new model of interdisciplinary cooperation by the faculty and inter-school cultivation of students, as well as a new culture of cross-functional collaboration.
The school plans to set up four major fields - preventive medicine, “big health”, health care big data, and public health policy and administration. These four fields are believed to be essential for the country’s public health system in the future.
With the current worth of RMB5.3 billion yuan, the 200 million shares donated was the single largest of the kind to university foundations in China so far. What makes it more significant is that it was not a company donation. It didn’t come from Vanke as a listed company. Instead, it was collective donation by all Vanke employees, making this the largest single donation by employees of a company in the charity history of China. Vanke will not seek any commercial interests or economic returns with the act.
Wang Shi said that this was the dream-come-true moment for all employees of Vanke. This asset originated from the equity stake in the firm put aside by founding shareholders in the corporatization process back in 1988. It is held by all employees of Vanke who nine years ago collectively and unanimously decided to donate it for charity purposes. Attributable to Vanke’s sound performance, the worth of this asset has grown from RMB 5.2 million 32 years ago, to 900 million 9 years ago and then to 5.3 billion today.
This is a common achievement and collective wealth attributable to the hard work of tens of thousands of Vanke employees over the span of 36 years ever since 1984. Its donation today to the public health cause of the mankind is the best outcome for Vanke founding shareholders equity. At the same time, given that Vanke came into being and grew stronger in Shenzhen, Wang Shi expressed hope that Vanke School of Public Health, Tsinghua University would take part in and generously support improvement of health care services in Shenzhen.
As one of the Vanke employees who made the donation, Chairman Yu Liang said, COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented global public health crisis, bringing all human beings closely together as members of a community with shared future. No one is able to stay aloof or handle it alone. To stay alive becomes a real issue. Each and every one of us experiences hardship and faces challenges in fighting the virus. We have all come to realize the importance of higher public health standards. Public health will surely emerge from this pandemic as the most prominent subject globally. Much more critical research work needs to be done, and done fast. It is at this point that Tsinghua University expressed hope to receive Vanke’s support to build a school of public health. Entrusted by the Center, we swiftly reached agreement with Tsinghua University Education Foundation to build the school together.
With commitment to a lofty cause, one shall always stay true to his mission. The chance to use this asset for a meaningful cause, when it’s most needed, is the best gift for Vanke founder Mr. Wang Shi and all employees for 36 years of hard work.

Think City, a community-focused urban regeneration organisation that works closely with local authorities, led the technical site visit on September 18 for the purpose of the Madras Area Improvement. UNStudio Founding partner Caroline Bos, UNStudio Partner and UNStudio Asia Director Hannes Pfau, UNStudio Director Garett Hwang and UNSense Head of Design and Strategies Ren Yee joined the tour around Madras Lane (Petaling Street), a narrow alleyway that is known for its tasty hawker fare and wet market, to experience first-hand the various physical and social issues that were rampant in the area.
Grow with Cities; Envisioning the City of the Future
During the WCSC 2019 Conference on September 19, Caroline Bos, the Co-founder and Principal Urban Planner at UNStudio in her presentation titled “New Urban Typologies – Envisioning the City of the future” points out that there are various challenges facing cities nowadays, which include the “Health” of the urban population and the urban environment, diversity and inclusiveness in the society, economic development of the cities as well as the education systems. Thus, when a city is being developed, the authorities as well as its inhabitants should consider all these concerns and elements to create a more liveable city.
Afterwards, Vanke Malaysia Chief Operating Officer Dr Zhou Chao Bin enlightened the attendees in Lightning Session 1 with his presentation titled “Grow with Cities”. He highlighted some of the key projects by Vanke in China, namely Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Shenzhen. He also teased the Vanke project in Kuala Lumpur which will be done in collaboration with UNStudio.
POST WCSC CONFERENCE TECHNICAL STUDY
Moderated by the UN Studio team, the second part of the ‘Masterclass’ workshop aimed at educating, engaging, creating awareness and sharing best practices to tackle the challenges found in development areas with urban planning issues. Attendees made up of City Managers, City Planners, City Architects, City Engineers and other professionals brainstormed ideas for the Madras Area Improvement, practising smart and sustainable solutions to explore how Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia can prepare for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges towards becoming a world class sustainable and liveable city.
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 July – Presented by Dr Zhou Chao Bin, Vanke Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), 40 members of REHDA Youth and stakeholder turned up atVanke Experiential Hall (VEH) to learn about Vanke and Dr Zhou’s career highlights with China’s largest Property Management firm and its Top 3 Property Developer. The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of attendees to find out how the Fortune Global 500 company, which has been listed for the fourth consecutive year and just moved to No 254, got into the property development business and how its leadership set revolutionary ideas into motion.
Company DNA
Based on the book The Vanke Way written by Wang Shi, the Founder and first Chairman of Vanke, it traces his personal journey since graduation and how his fortunes became intertwined with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Development Company (SD). In 1984, the Shenzhen Modern Scientific Education Instruments Exhibition Centre was opened on 21 September and that date became Vanke’s Company Day
The state-owned enterprise successfully became a standard enterprise after undergoing shareholding reform in 1988 and changed its name to the Shenzhen Wan-ke Co. Ltd. When Vanke was listed as the second counter on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Wang Shi and his entire management team chose to forgo their shares, placing the income to benefit the Group’s employees or public works instead. Vanke then entered the real estate business through a land auction in Shenzhen and brought land for its flagship Weideng Villa Development.
Since then, there was no holding back as Vanke forged ahead with revolutionary ideas including not making a profit exceeding 25%, having the view of ‘not holding land, not holding sale and not holding all business opportunities’, building excellent homes for ordinary people by being a new lifestyle provider and being an urban and rural development and living services provider. Vanke is also known as the biggest green developer in the world and is guided by the Right Path as a responsible corporate citizen.
When Wang Shi turned 48, he resigned as the CEO and Yu Liang, who had been working with Wang Shi for 27 years, took over the reins of leadership. Wang Shi continued his mountaineering passion and conquered the 7 continental Summits and 2 Poles by December 2005. Meanwhile, Vanke Athletes Co., Ltd. made a healthy lifestyle part of the corporate culture.
When Dr Zhou unveiled the thought-provoking concept of a partnership-based struggle, it spoke of the commitment within Vanke’s team to see through a successful undertaking of all their projects. The sharing took the audience through the tough times of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and emerged on the other side, breaking through the RMB500 billion mark in 2017 and going strong ever since.
Career Highlights
Dr Zhou, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Guangdong Industry University (China) and a Master’s degree from Cardiff University (Wales, UK), shared on his Doctorate degree (from Tianjin University, China) while being attached with Vanke.
Since beginning his stint in 2006, Dr Zhou has worn many hats, including Product R&D, Design Quality Control and many project developments with Vanke. He drew the sharing session to a close by fielding questions from the floor on the different product and service offerings by Vanke in China.
KUALA LUMPUR, 13 July – The Royal Selangor Club, Bukit Kiara Sports Annex saw 180 football players and about 50 employees and their families descended on its pitch for a thrilling football league organised by Vanke Malaysia. In its’ second year running, the football event upholds the company’s dedication to encourage a healthy lifestyle while cementing relationships with its local stakeholders.
Addressing the crowd in his opening speech was Vanke Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dr Zhou Chao Bin, who referred to Ola Bola the musical, based on lives of the 1970s Golden Generation of Malaysian footballers, as an inspiration to why football was chosen by Vanke Malaysia as a way to bring people from all walks of life together.
The ten teams gunning for glory at the group stages were the Kuala Lumpur City Hall or Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), represented by the Planning Division and two teams from the Building Division; the Kuala Lumpur Land Office (Kestawi FC); the Department of Environment (DoE), Kuala Lumpur; Air Selangor (AiS FC) and media teams represented by Utusan Malaysia, TV3 and iProperty.com as well as the hosts, Vanke Malaysia.
As a thunderstorm loomed over the third-place playoffs, Utusan Malaysia prevailed against DBKL A in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out surging ahead with 4 goals to 1 in a best-of-5 format. The final draw of Kestawi FC and AiS FC was a masterclass in football as both Group A and B’s strongest sides met for the first time. Kestawi FC prevailed with a 2-1 score by the final whistle and were crowned Champions of Vanke League Cup 2019.
The Closing Ceremony saw Dr Zhou Chao Bin presenting the third-place and runner-up trophies while the Championship Trophy was presented by Vanke Malaysia’s Managing Director, Mr Lang Cong. More photos can be found at www.facebook.com/VankeMalaysia/

Confluence of Design Thoughts & Vanke’s Approach
The topic of the WCSC Conference sparks interest in Vanke Malaysia as it is a timely question to ask even as Kuala Lumpur stands at the crossroads of deciding its future. As an urban and rural developer and living services provider, Vanke’s belief in the primacy of design thinking, innovation and research is in alignment with their participation in WCSC.
The design thinking process begins with an occupant-centric approach and that is the same line of thought in developing a liveable and sustainable city of the future. For this reason, UN Studio’s deep planning aspects is a good collaborative effort with Vanke Malaysia in their effort to introduce innovation and technology as part of Kuala Lumpur’s future. The Malaysian delegation saw the participation of Mr Sivasuriyamoorthy Sundara Raja, Executive Director of Investment Promotion from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and his colleague Ms Khoo Siao Hooi, the Assistant Director of Foreign Investment Promotion Division. Mr See Chee Kong from the Malaysian Embassy in the People’s Republic of China and Mr Beh Ching Chye, Consulate General of Guangzhou, completed the delegation.
Led by Vanke’s Vice-President, Ms Wang Yun, the tour was conducted by Vanke R&D Centre’s Managing Director (MD), Mr Tan Yu Ang and co-hosted by Vanke Malaysia’s MD, Mr Lang Cong and its Head of Finance, Mr Li Dapeng.
Research & Development (R&D) – The heart of technological breakthrough
The official visit to Vanke’s R&D Centre focussed on the technological advancements in built and natural environments within the residential property segment and its related studies. Of particular note is the Centre’s work in developing specialty architectural materials, low-energy consumption methodology and eco-landscape studies, which have formed the bedrock of sustainable architecture since its establishment in 1999.
The tour began with a visit to the tropical botanical garden, which showcases planting planning experiments; the Industrialised Building System (IBS) department, which features among others, low maintenance construction techniques; followed by the Testing Centre, which allows visitors first-hand information on the materials under development. Altogether, the three areas enable Vanke to actualise its commitment as an urban and rural developer and living services provider to its customer base.
The delegation then paid a visit to the Showroom House, which demonstrates how design is applied to a building and the tour culminated in a visit to the Zero Carbon Building, a successful application of a zero-carbon footprint residence in real world conditions.
Moving Forward with Vanke Malaysia
It is hoped that the working visit will foster closer bilateral ties between China and Malaysia on a working level, especially with the Malaysian Government Agencies of MITI and MIDA having key insights on building technology for the property development sector from this visit.
In line with this, the Malaysian delegation and Vanke discussed the possibility of introducing the Centre’s R&D technology to Malaysia; raising the prospect of conducting research and development activities in through collaboration with local authorities and institutes of higher learning. This collaboration is important for higher technology transfer, enabling Malaysia to develop a local perspective and solution to the challenges faced within the architecture and property development industry.

The Tropical Rainforest Living Collection nursery created by TRCRC is home to many endangered saplings. During this trip, 30 mature saplings from the nursery were transferred to the ground and planted by our volunteers.Other activities during the trip included cave exploration as well as wildlife searching.

Today, Vanke Malaysia initiated its long-term collaboration with Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home(PECH) – a refuge for abandoned, abused and underprivileged children. Volunteers spent time getting to know the children, discussing their passions, dreams and hobbies. The visit commemorated the launch of Vanke’s “What is your Wish” campaign. “What is your Wish” campaign aims to empower underprivileged children through means of strengthening and developing their skillsets with tailormade activities to the children’s needs. Instead of direct monetary support, we believe in active involvement and alleviating the home’s burdens by contributing towards their day to day basic needs from food to some crucial household expenses.
Description
Highlight of the day – volunteers and the kids coming together to give the external walls of the home a fresh coat of paint, before capping the day off with a beautiful hand painted mural design.
Smiles splashed across the faces of both the volunteers and children – who started the day as strangers, but left having learnt a little more about each other.
In celebration of Children’s Day, we spent a day to refocus on important things and bond with each other’s families.
In line with our core value to “Create a Healthy and Enriched Life”, we have led the health movement in over 60 major cities and conveyed a healthy and joyful sports philosophy to the society through our successful convening of "Run for Fun" since 2013.
